Mason Carter was born on the asteroid Krola, which at the time was governed by the empire. However, when Carter was only 15 years old, the Empire collapsed, and Krola - largely forgotten by those in power - struggled to sustain itself. Carter needed to leave to find work, taking a transport to what had formerly been the imperial capital where he found a job working in a factory. However, he was barely able to make enough money to survive, and the capital soon became more authoritarian with the rise of the Following of Reunion. Desperate for an escape, Carter took a job on the mercenary ship Delirium. He quickly worked his way through the ship's ranks, eventually becoming the captain's second-in-command. However, the formerly welcoming captain soon grew paranoid that his crew would usurp him. During a raid on an Ascendant shipyard, the mercenaries captured several cutting-edge battleships, and the captain saw an opportunity to remove Carter from the picture without causing a power struggle. He gave Carter command of his own ship: an experimental Lumen-class corvette designed specifically for ramming maneuvers. Carter didn't actually want the ship, but the message was clear: he was no longer welcome on the Delirium. After putting together a crew of his own, he began to make a name for himself as captain of the Unstoppable Force, one of the most dangerous mercenary ships in the system.
Having grown up in an abusive household, Jacob Richards took the first escape he could get - a job on the mercenary ship Delirium. He quickly became friends with Mason Carter, going on to join his crew when he was put in command of the Unstoppable Force. He tries to come off as friendly, but he's generally distrustful of all but a few people. However, he's a reliable ally for people he does trust, and he's the player character's closest friend and confidant.
